Sage A. Woodward, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, crashed his BMW on the highway near mile marker 35.2 in Plainville around 3:45 a.m., Massachusetts State Troopers said. The car landed in water, but the vehicle burst into flames, which started a small brush fire.

Troopers Matt Higgins and Grant Gadbois were the first on the scene and found the 2008 sedan upside down in the channel. They rushed down the embankment and found Woodward unconscious and face down in the water.

As one trooper fought back the flames, the other pulled Woodward from the car.

The two troopers dragged him away from the flames with the help of two Good Samaritans and took turns performing CPR until paramedics arrived. They rushed Woodward to Attleboro's Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, officials said.

One of the troopers was also taken to Sturdy to treat a cut on his hand.

Police closed two lanes of the interstate for more than three hours as they cleaned and cleared the crash site.

Troopers are investigating what caused the crash.
